Cyberjaya, Malaysia, 3 May 2019 – Malaysian Global Innovation & Creativity Centre (MaGIC) on 27 April 2019 launched the nation’s first social enterprise themed masterclass, a nationwide intensive course on social entrepreneurship designed to create and accredit 500 new Malaysian social enterprises in two (2) years.
Over 45 attendees comprising budding and experienced social entrepreneurs, civil society partners, students and corporate as well as government stakeholders gathered at the Se|Tempat co-working space in Kuala Lumpur to participate in the one (1) day course. The Social Entrepreneurship (SE) Masterclass provides aspiring and early-stage social enterprises with an intensive immersion into the fundamentals of social entrepreneurship to help develop or validate social impact ideas. SE Masterclass is a programme powered by Malaysia’s Social Inclusion & Vibrant Entrepreneurship (MasSIVE), an initiative by MaGIC that aims to drive social impact through entrepreneurship initiatives that are outward looking and cohesive to relevant ecosystem players.
The SE Masterclass takes participants through the basic principles of social entrepreneurship, latest national developments in social entrepreneurship guidelines and the perks of being a social entrepreneur. The masterclass will also feature an ecosystem interactive dialogue session where participants will have the opportunity to hear from the country’s existing social enterprises who will share about the trials and tribulations faced as a social entrepreneur and what inspires them to keep doing what they do.
The event kicked-off with an opening address from YBhg. Datuk Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi, Secretary General of the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development (MED) whom said “Social entrepreneurship is vital to drive real socio-economic benefits for Malaysia. The SE Masterclass is one of the many initiatives by MED powered by MaGIC to increase public awareness of social entrepreneurship as well as encourage more Malaysian youth to venture into this sector to create long-term benefits for the nation while contributing to the wealth of the nation. In our bit to ensure this scenario, MED recently launched the National Social Entrepreneurship Accreditation Guidelines, a living document that provides better definition, clarity and accreditation information on entrepreneurial activities.”
During the masterclass launch, participants heard from Ayu Abdullah of Energy Action Partners, Zikry Kholil from Incitement, Wen Shin Chia of Greenyards and MaGIC’s Yasmin Rasyid. The SE Masterclass is set to be held across five (5) states- Kuala Lumpur, Pahang, Melaka, Selangor and Sabah with more to be confirmed soon, between April to December 2019.
Dzuleira Abu Bakar, Chief Executive Officer of MaGIC, said: “The SE Masterclass is one of MaGIC’s flagship programmes designed to create and catalyse the growth of local social entrepreneurs. We want to encourage Malaysians to have an impact-driven mindset fueled by creativity and innovation. With this in mind, we decided to widen our reach and design a programme to inspire Malaysians to start thinking about creating meaningful solutions- solutions that can create a positive impact on all strata of the society as well as address environmental issues for the nation if not larger. This masterclass enables the MasSIVE team at MaGIC to identify potential and existing ideas and channel them to our IDEA accelerator to help them pilot their ideas, strengthen their business models, solidify their impact delivery models and secure capital through fundraising with an end goal of being accredited.”
