Calling for startups & entrepreneurs to pitch and validate your ideas and solve a real problem.

The Session

Grill or Chill (GoC) is a platform for startups to showcase their products and get valuable feedback from experts in the startup ecosystem.

How does it work?

Each startup to be grilled are given:
3 minutes – to showcase their product
3 minutes – to be grilled by grillers

Alan Lim

President, Malaysian Business Angel Network(MBAN) and Partner at NEXEA

Alan Lim is the current Malaysian Business  Angel Network (MBAN) President and Partner at NEXEA, an early Startup Accelerator, Angel Network and Venture Capital. He has advised and mentored countless companies in term of strategic growth and also is an expert in regional expansion.

Alan is the co-founder and former CEO of MediaBanc Group; the largest media monitoring and insights company in South-East-Asia since 1997. He fully exited the business in mid-2014 when the company was listed in the ASX as iSentia Group Ltd. He has successfully grown a few startups regionally, noticeably Commsight who manage to expand to Indonesia and Vietnam; with Thailand being in the pipeline.

Naysan Munusamy

Managing Partner, TH Capital

Naysan is the Managing Partner of TH Capital which is a Malaysian based private investment firm with strong South East Asian connections. TH Capital is a platform that empowers and accelerates ventures with financial capital infusion, business consultancy, strategic mentorship and strong networking opportunities. TH Capital primarily invests in the FinTech and E-Commerce industry and has completed eleven investments into startups to date.

Naysan is also the Co-Founder of MoneyMatch which is an award winning digital platform fully licensed by Bank Negara Malaysia executing cross border trade payments and individual remittances. MoneyMatch is now executing over a billion ringgit annually across 80 countries and this rapid success has been driven by optimizing our treasury operations with proprietary machine learning algorithms as well as integrations with blockchain solutions such as ripple which was the first in Malaysia for quicker global disbursements.

Back in early 2015, Naysan joined venture with Sam Shafie & Kashminder Singh to launch pitchIN’s Equity Crowdfunding platform and served as Chief Operating Officer from inception, obtaining licensing from the Securities Commission till the present as pitchIN is Malaysia’s largest and most successful equity crowdfunding platform currently. Naysan holds an Executive MBA from the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow, Scotland) and has been a career banker with a wealth of experience in financial markets working as a fixed income & currency trader in Standard Chartered Singapore & Goldman Sachs Hong Kong.

Zaim Zainuddin

Investment Analyst, MAVCAP

Zaim Zainuddin an investment analyst currently involved in the funds under MAVCAP to further enhance the VC ecosystem in Malaysia. Previously, joined a Shariah-compliant P2P Financing startup as one of the earliest employees. The FinTech company was one of the 6 to acquire the P2P license by the Securities Commission. I was spearheading the onboarding of investors and businesses on the platform to facilitate shariah-compliant financing, both in Mudharabah and Murabahah.

Other than that, he was joining a cryptocurrency exchange in Malaysia. I was of the among the 5 pioneer employees in the company. My value add was in the growth strategy of the company as well as facilitating the application for the digital assets exchange license by the Securities Commission.

Maisarah Shariff

Investment Manager of DEQ800, Cradle Sdn Bhd

Maisarah started her career as a Research Officer (Evaluation and Monitoring) with the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) upon her graduation from Universiti Teknologi MARA Shah Alam with a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Biology. 

During her tenure with MARDI, she was entrusted to manage Ministry of Agriculture (MOA)’s TechnoFund Innovation & Commercialisation grants worth RM 114 Million and responsible in evaluating and managing every funded project’s technical and financial progress for reporting to the Technical Committee and Steering Committee chaired by the then General Secretary of Ministry of Agriculture, (Include name here).

After her stint at MARDI, Maisarah joined Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd (Cradle), Malaysia’s early-stage technology start-up influencer in March 2015 as Evaluation Analyst for Cradle Investment Programme (CIP) where she oversaw the evaluation process of technopreneurs’ ideas for pre-commercialisation funding by Cradle. During her time as analyst, she had managed to bring 61% of her investee portfolios to get commercialisation funding from various funding avenues in the companies’ second year, following their pre-commercialisation funding period. 

In 2017, she was promoted to Investment Manager – Venture Capital where she was assigned to oversee Cradle’s DEQ800 portfolio, a development equity investment programme offering funding and value-added assistance of up to RM 800,000 to high-calibre Malaysian-born technology start-ups at Seed and Pre-Series A stages. To date, she has managed 12 active deals with her portfolio companies’ valuation performance stand at 31% of per annum within a two-year investment period.

Maisarah carries with her a 10-year experience in investment, market analysis, and fund management. 

She is passionate in building the local early stage tech companies from the ground up and is active in helping them through her participation in speaking engagements and coaching classes in the areas of financial structure, business transformation and commercialisation of technology and innovation.

Outside her role at Cradle, Maisarah has co-authored a research paper entitled ‘Food for Wellness’ for Malaysia Food Technology Seminar and currently sits as a member for Universiti Malaya’s Innovation and Commercialisation panel.
