Daniel Vong
Co-founder, Wangi Lai PLT

Daniel Vong is a Bachelor of Engineering (Robotics and Mechatronics) (Honours) and Bachelor of Computer Science graduate with a passion for almost anything. Daniel participated in many global competitions and hackathons ranging from HydroContest – a contest to build the fastest, most energy efficient boat to Microsoft Imagine Cup – a global technology competition. Daniel was the Engineering Lead of Microsoft Student Partners Malaysia FY15-17.

Daniel and his sister Stella embarked on this journey to help their late grandmother to cope with her loss of vision due to cataract and glaucoma. To better understand visual impairment and the daily hurdles needed to overcome, they took initiative to understand it from her perspective. The standard white canes are unable to detect obstacles; especially those above knee level. No major innovation of the white cane for the visually impaired has been made yet, whereas guide dogs are expensive and pose acceptance challenges especially in our country (Malaysia). As a result, we created the BAWA Smart Cane to fill this gap.
